In a world where digital skills are becoming as essential as reading and writing, Digital Future Aotearoa is making waves in Ōtautahi classrooms. Through their Outreach programme, they're not just teaching kids to code – they're transforming how our tamariki learn and grow in the digital age.

Digital Future Aotearoa (DFA) believes in the power of connection. Their work is driven by community-focused initiatives. They strive to provide access to digital education that sparks innovation and empowers tamariki to thrive in today’s tech-driven world. One of the most impactful ways DFA does this is through their Ōtautahi Outreach programme, where they collaborate closely with teachers and schools to ensure that digital technologies are seamlessly integrated into the classroom.

Ana from DFA has been working with Whītau School’s junior classes, bringing digital education tools and confidence to kaiako (teachers) and tamariki (students) alike. The results? Remarkable growth in both skills and enthusiasm for digital learning. From coding with programmable education tech like Blue-bots and Sphero’s to creating interactive stories using Scratch Jr., the students are diving headfirst into the world of digital technologies.

Ana’s work doesn’t just stop at teaching; she’s building lasting relationships with the school community. Reflecting on her experience, Ana shares:

“My highlight is being involved in our hāpori (community) where we are welcomed into our local kura. We get to build relationships with amazing kaiako and tamariki and see them learn together, where we can weave Digital Technologies & Hangarau Matihiko learning into the classroom.”

Digital equity is at the heart of DFA’s mission. They know that not every whānau (family) has access to devices or the internet. That’s why DFA provides students and teachers in underserved communities with the tools and support they need, helping to bridge the digital divide. Programmes like Ōtautahi Outreach play a vital role in levelling the playing field, providing opportunities for tamariki who might otherwise be left behind in an increasingly digital world. When all students have equal access to digital learning, the possibilities for their future expand exponentially.

Through Ōtautahi Outreach, DFA aims to inspire tamariki to be more than just users of technology. They want them to become creators and innovators, shaping the future of Aotearoa. The programme empowers teachers too, building their confidence and capacity to integrate these tools long after our visits. The foundation laid by this initiative ensures sustainable pathways for digital learning, creating an environment where students and teachers alike can flourish.
