How to claim your rebate

Right now, there’s roughly $1,000,000,000 of unclaimed charitable donation tax rebates waiting for New Zealanders to claim them.

Some of that money is yours. Maybe you could do with that money in your pocket. The charities you support could definitely use it. Either way, the last place to leave it is with the IRD because if the money isn’t claimed, its potential is lost.

If you’re a New Zealand taxpayer, as an individual, you can claim up to 33% of your contribution back. (Business givers, see here.) We’ve got two ways you can claim your rebate. Both let you decide if the money goes back in your pocket, or redirects to the charities you already support.

#1 Do it Yourself

DIY with myIR: Learn how you can upload your receipts directly if you have a myIR account. When you get your rebate, if you want to regift it to your One Percent Collective charities, just transfer the rebate amount back to us via your online banking and we'll split it evenly among the charities you currently give to.

Snail Mail: Download, print and fill out this form then post it along with copies of your donation receipts.

#2 Let Supergenerous take care of it

Sign up with Supergenerous. It takes about 2 minutes. Supergenerous are the first NZ company registered with the IRD, dedicated entirely to filing donation tax rebates on your behalf – not just for the current tax year but previous years, too! For a fee that comes out of your rebate, Supergenerous will beaver away in the background to take care of your donation rebates every year from here on in. You choose whether to receive the rebate yourself or automatically regift it to your charities during the simple sign up.

HOT TIP: At Step 2 of the sign up which asks you to list the charities you’ve given to, simply put One Percent Collective Trust. No need to list each of our partner charities you give to.

Are you a business giver?

If you are donating through your business, please retain this receipt for your records and be sure to include it in your end of year tax return or forward it on to your accountant. If you complete an IR4, you will see the donations section in question 26. More information can be found on page 36 of this IRD guide.
